American History Essay

I find it interesting that many people (such as the founding fathers) in my American History readings are described as knowing how to use their minds. How many people today know how to use their minds? How many people think about and talk about politics and society and people in general?

People back in the 1700's and before didn't think that people could rule themselves, but I look at some of the kings and wonder if they could rule themselves, let alone an entire nation. People didn't think that all men were created equal, even those who were the ones at the bottom of the ladderbelieved that they weren't as important as the noblemen. All people are equal? Even slaves? Even women? Even peasants? They're just as important as men or kings? All are created equal?

How many people think that radically today? I don't think many do. I think people still think that some people are better than others--whether it's between blacks and whites or freshmen and seniors or the janitor and the CEO. People don't show other people the respect they deserve.

And I know I'm criticizing society in general, and that there are people in society in general who live up to this nation's claim that all men are created equal (and, Meghan, I mean all mankind, I'm just quoting the Declaration of Independence), but I wish they'd be more prominent and more radical. It's much more noticeable when you see someone do something wrong than something right, and therefore it takes a lot more of people doing things right to make everyone notice.

So I wish everyone would use their minds and make things happen and make people notice, make people notice that you treat everyone with respect, whether it's the janitor or your boss. The revolution truly was first in the minds and hearts of the people. Because when people use what they've got in their heads, big things happen. Unless you call the forming of a nation an incident not to be noticed or remembered.

THANK YOU MEGHAN! I was like getting on the computer going, oh yeah, I have to think some more (I've been thinking all day, this using your brain thing is seriously tiring unless you get some free time like I finally am) about what James commented, so now I don't, I can just say, "what she said." so

What she said. I see where James is coming from, but yeah...i have to go think some more. Piano. Explain later. So I guess I have to post later. Yeah. Buhbye.

James: I like what you said about we all have equal rights but we have to obtain our place in the community, that's definitely true. But I was talking more about how you treat people than their actual place in the community, like it doesn't matter where you are in the community, you still have to treat people with equal high levels of respect.

Meghan: I kind of wonder if it wasn't because those men had slaves that they were the ones who thought about liberty a lot, and I still think you're right on. :D
